'Little Bitty'...A Squirrel Tale

(Back to Duncraft.com Home Page)

Hi,

This is a picture of my little friend. I saved her life almost two years ago. She was about to drown and I rescued her. She was so exhausted and frightened and she just sat by me for a little while. I was able to pat her back. When she regained her strength, off she went into the woods. (I live in a beautiful wooded area in the country.) Every morning I put out some whole peanuts for the squirrels, scrub jays, titmice and woodpeckers.

Shortly after the rescue of 'Little Bitty', she started coming up to me to get her own peanut. She will now come to my door and look inside. She will come to my kitchen window and look for me. Of course when I see her, she definitely gets another peanut! On warm days when the patio door is open, she will come inside and get her own peanut out of the peanut bag. If she sees me outside, she comes running up to me. When my son and his family are here, she will ask for a peanut from them as well. She is our special little girl and is so cute. Sometimes she startles me when she drops down out of the tree and I was not aware she was there! I always save the peanuts that have three in them just for her. Even if there are still peanuts on the deck rail, if 'Little Bitty' sees me outside, she will come to me for her peanut. We all think she is pretty neat, even my mom who doesn't care for squirrels. Anyway, 'Little Bitty' has made my day many days and I enjoy her visits. I have had some problems with my health and 'Little Bitty' has been a bright spot in my life. (Some of my family tease me and tell me that I need to get one, a life, that is, since I get so much pleasure from a little squirrel!)

Thanks for reading my story about my little friend.

What a precious story...and photos.
It is so important to have those close connections with "special furry friends".

All the pictures are so cute I had a hard time picking out just one. But I am a softy with babies so I pick #2 as my favorite.

This is for Janet Taylor, the Little Bitty story. I would do anything if a little critter like that came to me. If you are the Janet Taylor from around Austin Texas, I know you I work at Fort Sam Houston where you and I met. Please email me at rrosa68@yahoo.com. Rosa Reulbach, Safety Office.

I really, really like squirrels and chipmunks BUT when my chipmunks eat my newly opened daisy petals and eat the roots of my new patio garden, I get furious. I bought a "have a heart" trap and I "re-locate" the chipmunks. Last summer I re-located 27 chipmunks, 1 mouse (different sized trap). One little ground squirrel got in my chipmunk trap but he batted his way out and never came back. As long as I have gardens, I can't have chipmunks. Only 1 large squirrel has looked down at my patio and hasn't been a problem yet.

Both my husband & I are such softies for grey & black squirrels. We actually put up all kinds of feeders including a peanut feeder for all of our squirrels. They are a constant source of amuzement especially on Saturday & Sunday mornings while we eat our breakfast together. We get to watch our furry friend snitch peanuts and enjoy themselves at our "diners".

The squirrels at my house have their own feeder, if it's empty, there are two of them that will sit on the deck railing and stair into the kitchen window!! Love watching them.

I once saw the Pelican Man in Sarasota, Fl. He was elderly and in a wheelchair. But he had peanuts in his pocket and the squarrel whould climb on his lap and take a peanut from his pocket. He rescued birds and animals in the area. There is a beautiful refuge that he started and continues to save birds and animals. It is always a fine thing to save and animal and they will never forget.

We have a bunch of squirrels that come to our patio door and wait for their peanut. Some will take them right out of our hands, and others will wait a few feet away. Squirrels are actually quite a bit of fun!!!

Thanks to all of you who posted comments to my story and a special thanks for your prayers and blessings. When Little Bitty takes a peanut from me now, I tell her that she is famous. It doesn't seem to matter to her at all!!! She just gets her peanut and off she goes. Thanks, Duncraft, for printing my tale! (To Rosa, it must be another Janet Taylor. I have never been to Fort Sam Houston. Sorry)
